Warning · some of these are genuinely extreme

A heads-up before you order

Toxic Waste Hazardously Sour Drum and Warheads Extreme Sour Hard Candy really are in another league. Their sour coating is three to four times more intense than a standard sour lolly like Zappo or Sour Patch. The ‘extreme’ label is not just marketing — first-timers genuinely tear up.

What makes candy sour? A coating of food-grade acid — most commonly citric acid (the same thing in lemon juice) and malic acid (tart green apples). Extreme sour candy layers several acids together, which is why the first 10–20 seconds are the sharpest before the flavour settles into the sweet centre.

Kids and tongue sensitivity. Children’s tongues are more sensitive than adults. Start them on mild (Sour Patch Kids, Mega Sour Cherry, Zappo) before moving up to medium and extreme. A small child genuinely struggling with Warheads is not unusual — don’t push them through it.

Tooth enamel. Acidic candy can soften tooth enamel temporarily — that’s true of any sour sweet, lemon juice or fizzy drink. Don’t hold extreme sour candy in your mouth for long, rinse with water after eating, and wait about 30 minutes before brushing so enamel has time to re-harden. Eat them as a fun treat, not a daily habit.

Sour candy FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we get most often before checkout.

What’s the sourest candy in Australia?

On our shelves, the sourest lollies are Toxic Waste Hazardously Sour Candy (the yellow barrel), Toxic Waste Smog Balls and Warheads Extreme Sour Hard Candy. They use a concentrated citric + malic acid coating that is three to four times more intense than a standard Zappo or Sour Patch. The sour phase lasts 15–40 seconds, then mellows into the sweet centre. If you want a challenge, these are the ones people post themselves eating on TikTok.

Are Sour Patch Kids available in Australia?

Yes. Sour Patch Kids are officially imported into Australia, but the available flavour mix is narrower than in the USA. We stock Sour Patch Kids Watermelon in 99g share bags and 190g bigger packs — the flavour that ships to Australia most reliably. Original mixed and Berries appear intermittently; when we have them in stock they show up on the same category page.

What actually makes candy sour?

Food acids. The two most common are citric acid (the tartness in lemons and oranges) and malic acid (the sharpness in green apples). Some extreme sweets also add tartaric acid or fumaric acid. These acids are usually dusted on the outside of the candy as a ‘sour coating’ so your tongue hits pure acid first before reaching the sweet centre. That’s why the first bite is always the most mouth-puckering bit.

Is extreme sour candy bad for your teeth?

Sour candy is acidic, and acid can soften tooth enamel temporarily — the same way fizzy drinks and lemon juice do. As an occasional treat it is fine for most people. To minimise impact: don’t hold extreme sour candy in your mouth for a long time, rinse your mouth with water after eating, and wait around 30 minutes before brushing so the enamel has time to re-harden. Make sour a weekly treat, not a daily habit.

Where can I buy sour lollies online in Australia?

Right here. SweetsWorld ships sour candy Australia-wide from our Newcastle NSW shop — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Darwin and regional everywhere in between. We dispatch same or next business day. Standard shipping is charged at checkout, and orders over AU$80 ship free. Everything in this hub is in physical stock — no drop-shipping, no surprise out-of-stock notices at the pack bench.

Do Woolworths or Coles sell Warheads and Toxic Waste?

Large Woolworths and Coles stores sometimes stock one or two Warheads lines — usually Chewy Cubes or Ooze Chewz — but the range is small and rotates in and out. Toxic Waste, the Hazardously Sour Drum and rarer Warheads formats (Super Sour Spray, Atomic Fizz, Galactic Cubes, Extreme Sour 744g tub) are almost never on supermarket shelves in Australia. That’s why specialist candy shops like SweetsWorld exist — we carry the full brand range year-round.

Is sour candy gluten-free?

It varies by brand. Hard candies like Warheads Extreme Sour Hard Candy and Toxic Waste drops are usually gluten free because they’re a sugar base with acid coating. Chewy and gummy sour candy is more mixed — some use wheat-based starches, others don’t. Always read the individual product page and the physical label before buying if you have coeliac disease or a serious gluten intolerance. Manufacturers occasionally change recipes, so the on-pack label is the only source of truth. Email us and we can check the current box for you.
