Good to know

Is licorice good or bad for you?

Black (real) licorice contains glycyrrhizin, the natural compound from the licorice root that gives it its distinctive flavour. For most healthy adults an occasional treat is fine, but the US FDA warns that eating more than about 2 ounces (around 57g) of black licorice a day for two weeks or more — especially if you are over 40 — can lower potassium levels and raise blood pressure. Moderation wins.

Red “licorice” is different. Strawberry ropes, Twizzlers and fruit laces usually contain no licorice extract at all — they are fruit flavour, sugar and a starch or flour base shaped the same way. If you are avoiding glycyrrhizin for health reasons, red ropes are the safer swap.

Gluten free options. Walker’s Liquorice Toffees are labelled gluten free on pack. If you have a gluten intolerance, always check the individual product page and manufacturer label before buying — formulations can change.

Licorice FAQs

Quick answers to the questions we get most often before checkout.

What is licorice actually made of?

Traditional black licorice is made from extract of the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, blended with sugar, molasses or golden syrup, flour or starch, and flavourings like aniseed. The active compound glycyrrhizin is what gives it the signature sweet-salty-bitter taste. “Liquorice” is the British and Australian spelling, “licorice” the American — both mean the same thing.

What’s the difference between red and black licorice?

Black licorice contains real licorice-root extract and tastes sweet-herbal-salty. Red “licorice” — Twizzlers, strawberry ropes, Fyna Red 1 Metre, Gustaf’s strawberry laces — contains no licorice extract at all. It is fruit-flavoured chewy candy made from sugar, starch or flour and flavouring, shaped the same way as the black original. Same chew, totally different flavour and ingredients.

Is black licorice bad for you?

For most adults, enjoying black licorice as an occasional treat is fine. The US FDA specifically warns that eating 2 ounces (about 57g) or more of black licorice daily for at least two weeks — particularly if you are 40 or older — can cause irregular heartbeat and raised blood pressure by lowering potassium. If you take blood pressure or heart medication, talk to your GP before making it a daily habit. Red licorice does not carry the same warning because it contains no glycyrrhizin.

What is Dutch salted licorice (drop)?

Dutch salted licorice — known locally as drop — is made with ammonium chloride (salmiak) as well as licorice root, which gives it a sharp salty-bitter kick on top of the sweetness. It is hugely popular in the Netherlands and sold in many strengths: our range includes Single Salt (mild), Double Salt (medium), Triple Salt (strong) and Salmiak Rocks (intense). If you are new to it, start with Single Salt before working up.

What are licorice allsorts?

Licorice Allsorts are a British-style assortment of bite-sized sweets built around black licorice, layered or coated with coloured fondant (pink, yellow, orange, blue) and coconut. They were invented in Sheffield in 1899 and are now made in Australia by Darrell Lea, and internationally by Maynards and Bassett’s. We stock Darrell Lea Allsorts 270g and 470g value pack, Maynards 130g and Big Lolly 850g bulk bag.

Is licorice gluten-free?

Many traditional licorice products contain wheat flour as a binder, so they are not gluten free by default. Some are: Walker’s Liquorice Toffees are labelled gluten free on the packaging. Always read the individual product page and the physical label before buying if you have coeliac disease or a serious gluten intolerance — manufacturers sometimes change recipes. If in doubt, email us and we’ll check the current box for you.
